Independent MP Sachida Nand has joined the political bloc led by Ioane Naivalurua, a move confirmed by Speaker Filimone Jitoko earlier today. This new alignment brings together Naivalurua’s group, which aims to support the government, and the recently added member, Shalen Kumar. Following Nand’s entry, the coalition now comprises eleven members, thus adopting the name “Bloc of 11” or G11.
This development is part of a larger reshaping of political alliances within Fiji’s Parliament. Earlier announcements by Speaker Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu had already indicated the formation of two distinct opposition groups following the transition of 25 Independent Members of Parliament from the former FijiFirst party. One faction includes 16 members led by Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu, while the other features Naivalurua’s group of nine members.
With the changing political dynamics, this shift reflects ongoing efforts among various lawmakers to establish their positions and alliances in the current parliamentary climate. The G11 now presents an expanded voice that may influence government policy making and governance.
The evolving political landscape carries a hopeful narrative, as new collaborations may enhance the representation and functionality of parliament, allowing for a more diverse discussion on governance issues during this transformational period in Fiji’s politics. The next steps for these groups will be crucial as the public watches how they navigate their roles ahead of impending electoral challenges.
