Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu has decided to withhold comments regarding the Group of 16’s (G16) stance on the proposed amendments to the 2013 Constitution for the time being. In an interview with FBC News, he stated that the opposition bloc plans to wait until after an upcoming meeting to deliver a formal statement, emphasizing their dedication to achieving a consensus on the issue.

The process to amend the Constitution is already underway, confirmed by Attorney General Graham Leung. The government intends to present a bill in the current parliamentary session, with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka expressing optimism about garnering support from at least four opposition MPs to ensure the bill’s passage.

This development mirrors ongoing discussions in Fijian politics regarding the disproportionate concentration of power in the executive branch, a concern raised by Professor Anthony James Regan. He has previously highlighted the potential ramifications of this power dynamic, urging a reevaluation of governance practices.

Seruiratu has previously expressed apprehension about the political obstacles faced by Fiji, attributing some of these challenges to a “culture of convenience.” He and his fellow G16 members are seeking to navigate a new political landscape while reaffirming their role as a dedicated opposition.

As Fiji gears up for the 2026 general elections, these discussions signal a significant shift in the political atmosphere, paving the way for greater accountability and potential governance reforms that resonate with the interests of the citizens.

This evolving narrative around the opposition’s position and the government’s push for constitutional amendments represents a critical juncture for Fiji, offering a promising outlook for increased political engagement and a governance structure that reflects the aspirations of the Fijian people for the future.
