Fiji has welcomed its newly appointed High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, Jackson Bernard Nato Evans, during a ceremonial event at the Fiji High Commission Chancery in Port Moresby. Mr. Evans expressed gratitude for the warm reception provided by the Fijian community and reaffirmed his dedication to enhancing the bilateral relationship between Fiji and PNG.
Evans, who also represents Fiji in Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands, acknowledged the contributions of his late predecessor, Mosese Tikoitoga, and said he would focus on advancing the shared objectives laid out in Fiji’s Foreign Policy White Paper, particularly concerning regional peace and cooperation.
Economically, Fiji and PNG continue to strengthen their ties with increasing trade and investment. Fijian companies have made significant investments in the region, including the establishment of Vodafone and businesses like Jack’s of Fiji and Prouds trading freely in PNG. The reopening of Fiji’s High Commission in early 2023 signifies a renewed commitment to diplomatic engagement after a closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mr. Evans’ appointment marks him as the ninth High Commissioner to PNG and presents a promising opportunity to foster cooperation and economic growth between the two nations. With his extensive background in military service, he is well-prepared to navigate the complexities of international diplomacy.
Overall, this transition signifies a positive step forward for diplomatic relations in the Pacific region, highlighting Fiji’s commitment to building a collaborative future with its neighbors. The hope is that under Evans’ leadership, Fiji and PNG will experience deepened ties and mutual prosperity.
