The recent BAF MSME Conference 2025, held at the Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort, has highlighted the crucial role that micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) play in Fiji’s economy. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica emphasized the need for actionable support for these businesses, stating, “The time for lip service is over. This is the era of delivery.” This statement reflects a significant commitment to address the specific needs and aspirations of the MSME sector.
Kamikamica hinted that the upcoming government budget, set to be presented by Minister for Finance Prof. Biman Prasad, will likely incorporate a more MSME-focused approach, a move that has been echoed in earlier discussions on the importance of this sector. He pointed out that MSMEs contribute more than 18% of Fiji’s GDP and employ nearly 60% of the workforce, indicating their potential for further growth with appropriate support.
Underlining the importance of systemic transformation, Kamikamica outlined strategic initiatives that the government is pursuing to enhance the MSME ecosystem, including the launch of Fiji’s first-ever MSME Strategic Plan, the Access to Business Funding Act 2025, and the introduction of digital platforms like BusinessNow Portal. These efforts aim to provide financial access and digital readiness to entrepreneurs.
The conference’s theme, “Sustainable Tides: Connecting MSMEs for a Circular Economy,” aligns with the broader government strategy to promote sustainability within the sector. More than 300 MSME operators attended the conference, engaging in discussions about sustainable practices and growth opportunities.
Similar initiatives have been previously addressed, such as the recent Co-Investment Fund designed to bolster MSME projects, and the Hummingbird META 2025 program, which aims to enhance entrepreneurship through various new support structures.
Kamikamica’s remarks and the ongoing commitments by the Fijian government signal a hopeful future for entrepreneurship in Fiji. The attention given to the MSME sector presents a positive opportunity for job creation, income generation, and foundational growth within communities. This ongoing focus provides a firm pathway for local entrepreneurs to thrive in a supportive environment, ultimately fostering a more resilient economy.
