Nicole Matavesi, a 21-year-old from Qamea, Taveuni, is competing for the coveted FMF Hibiscus crown. Born in Suva and raised in Nadera, Nicole is currently pursuing a degree at the University of the South Pacific, focusing on International Relations, Politics, International Business, and Marketing. Alongside her studies, she works as a marketing coordinator at Damodar Cinemas.

In her spare time, Nicole enjoys reading, playing Dungeons and Dragons, and writing fictional stories, though she prefers to keep her literary works private. She has varied interests that also include occasional modeling, playing the guitar, and dancing with ManaVa Performing Arts.

Nicole’s advocacy centers on the concepts of equity over equality and increasing youth participation in public spaces. She highlights the disparity faced by youths from rural areas who often miss out on scholarships due to their circumstances compared to urban peers. “Equity means starting at the same line,” she explains, emphasizing the need for a level playing field.

Moreover, she champions the inclusion of youth in vital sectors like politics, education, agriculture, and tourism to foster progress. Nicole also strongly advocates for women’s rights and the process of decolonization. Her message to young women is empowering, urging them to aspire beyond their backgrounds, with the reassurance that with the right support, they can achieve their dreams.

The Miss Hibiscus Festival, a celebration of tradition and culture, is set to commence at the end of August at the Suva Civic Foreshore and Suva Civic Centre. It promises to be a vibrant event with FMF and Vodafone as the Gold sponsors, showcasing diverse talents and cultural heritage. Nicole Matavesi stands as a promising contender, representing a blend of academic achievement, cultural advocacy, and a vision for a more equitable future.
