The Crest Fiji men’s netball team achieved a historic milestone by clinching the title at the Men’s Nations Series in Singapore, marking their first-ever triumph in an international tournament. In a thrilling final, Fiji staged a remarkable comeback to defeat the Australia Under-23 team with a narrow score of 55-54 at the Jurong East Sporting Complex, successfully avenging their earlier 48-60 loss to Australia during the pool stage.
Throughout the tournament, Fiji demonstrated impressive talent and resilience. In the pool matches, they kicked off with a strong 47-36 victory against the England Trailblazers, followed by an outstanding 57-38 win over New Zealand. They showcased their dominance with a significant 62-27 victory against the tournament hosts and capped the pool round with an 82-20 drubbing of Hong Kong. This impressive performance earned them a spot in the semifinals, where they continued their strong play by defeating England once again with a score of 62-27, thus securing their position in the final.
This victory is particularly significant as it marks the first tour for a Fiji men’s netball team since the 2004 International Men’s Netball Championship held in Melbourne, Australia. The team, under the leadership of captain Kitione Waqavonovono and vice-captain Joseva Nawaqa, celebrated their groundbreaking success.
This achievement not only showcases the talent and determination of the Fiji men’s netball team but also paves the way for greater recognition and support for men’s netball in the region. The team’s success serves as an inspiration for future generations of athletes in Fiji and emphasizes the importance of perseverance and teamwork in overcoming challenges.
