The Cabinet has given its approval to review the Mahogany Industry Development Act 2010 (MIDA 2010) and the Mahogany Industry (Licensing and Branding) Act 2011 (MILBA 2011). Acting Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica explained that MIDA 2010 established the Mahogany Industry Council, while MILBA 2011 outlines the licensing and branding procedures for Fiji’s mahogany.

Kamikamica noted that the Mahogany Industry Taskforce Review Committee, which was formed in March 2024, has recommended this legislative review to address concerns raised by stakeholders in the mahogany sector. The examination of MIDA 2010 and MILBA 2011 aims to assess the functions of the Mahogany Industry Council and support the expansion of the mahogany industry, enhancing the acknowledgment of Fiji’s hardwood products both domestically and globally.
