Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka reaffirmed his dedication to preserving the integrity of the Commission of Inquiry (COI) that is investigating the appointment of FICAC Commissioner Barbara Malimali. In response to inquiries regarding a request for an urgent meeting from COI counsel assisting, Janet Mason, Rabuka clarified that he has not yet met with her. He emphasized his desire to avoid any perception of influencing the commission’s decisions.

“I do not want to be seen as influencing any outcomes of the Commission of Inquiry. I want them to complete their work,” Rabuka stated, indicating his openness to discussions about extending the inquiry’s timeline or providing additional resources if needed, to keep the President informed.

This inquiry has captured public attention, especially after allegations arose suggesting that Malimali attempted to sway the evidence presented to the COI, prompting concerns over the integrity of the organization. Last month, Mason underscored the necessity of clarifying Malimali’s involvement in light of these allegations and ensuring that the COI operates without external pressures.

Rabuka’s latest remarks illustrate his broader commitment to transparency and accountability in the governance of Fiji. He has previously stressed the importance of the COI’s independence to avoid any allegations of political interference in FICAC investigations, a critical aspect of restoring public trust.

The developments surrounding the inquiry offer a valuable opportunity to uphold ethical standards within Fiji’s government framework. With the inquiry underway, there is optimism that it could lead to vital reforms that enhance governance and accountability in the nation, ultimately fostering a more transparent political environment.

The scrutiny surrounding this matter can be seen as a positive signal for citizens who are seeking integrity in public office and systems that enforce the rule of law.
