On March 3, 2025, Fiji’s Minister for Policing, Hon. Ioane Naivalurua, held a significant meeting with Australian Federal Police (AFP) Commissioner Reece Kershaw to reinforce the collaborative security framework between Fiji and Australia. The discussion, which included Australia’s High Commissioner to Fiji, HE Ewen McDonald, and a delegation from the AFP, centered on several key initiatives aimed at enhancing Fiji’s policing capabilities.
A primary focus of the meeting was the integration of advanced artificial intelligence technologies into police operations, which is expected to enhance the effectiveness of law enforcement in Fiji. Additionally, the development of a new police headquarters was discussed, which further indicates the commitment to improving infrastructure for the Fiji Police Force.
Minister Naivalurua acknowledged Australia’s extensive support and highlighted the importance of the partnership between the Fiji Police and the AFP. In response, Commissioner Kershaw reaffirmed the AFP’s dedication to strengthening Fiji’s policing capacity. He emphasized the value of sending Fijian officers for training alongside their Australian counterparts, providing them with essential hands-on experience.
This engagement builds on the existing cooperation framework, including the Solesolevaki Memorandum of Understanding, which has facilitated numerous joint operations and training programs, thus fostering a culture of collaboration in the Pacific region.
The intentions demonstrated through this partnership signify a commendable proactive approach to combatting pressing security issues like organized crime and drug trafficking. With continued international support, Fiji is well-positioned to enhance its law enforcement capabilities, leading to a safer environment for its citizens and greater stability in the region. The hopeful partnership between Fiji and Australia indicates a bright outlook for future security initiatives in the Pacific.
