Fiji’s immigration system is undergoing major reforms aimed at enhancing national security and tackling transnational issues like human trafficking and migrant smuggling. Minister for Immigration Viliame Naupoto made this announcement in Parliament, detailing the importance of immigration in contributing to Fiji’s security, economic development, and social growth.
The transformation of the immigration department into a full-fledged ministry emphasizes its increased significance in managing both national security and economic development. Naupoto highlighted a comprehensive approach that includes streamlining processes to facilitate business, tourism, and labor mobility while ensuring secure borders.
A crucial aspect of the reform efforts is the drafting of a National Migration Policy. This policy aims to guide labor mobility programs, establish pathways for skilled migration, and address issues related to irregular migration. Furthermore, significant amendments to the Immigration Act of 2003 are underway to modernize the legal framework and bolster border control.
The minister promised that new reforms will make the visa and permit processes more efficient, strengthen measures against illegal migration, and uphold migrants’ rights. Additionally, Fiji’s commitment to combatting human trafficking and smuggling is evident, with a focus on increasing training for immigration officers and enhancing cooperation with regional and international entities. Currently, Fiji is on the U.S. State Department’s Trafficking in Persons Tier 2 watch list, and an interagency group is striving to improve this ranking, with a draft report expected to be submitted to the U.S. Embassy by March.
Previous discussions have indicated that the number of illegal immigrants in Fiji is a significant concern, with figures having more than doubled in the past year. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has underscored the inadequacy of current facilities for managing illegal immigrants, raising serious concerns about individuals being detained alongside convicted criminals.
Recent statistics reveal that the number of illegal immigrants has risen to over 8,000, highlighting the urgent need for reform and preventive measures within the immigration system. The government is proactive in addressing these issues, considering options like amnesty for certain undocumented individuals while ensuring a more structured and humane immigration system.
