Caves have always captivated our imagination, but nowhere is this fascination deeper than in Fiji, where indigenous communities view these geological formations as sacred sites intertwined with their history and culture. Earlier this year, a viral video illuminated the discovery of a previously unknown cave located in the highlands of Nakorotubu, within the Ra province. The individuals from the village of Nalidi who discovered the cave believed their ancestors had prophesied its revelation, hinting at treasures in the form of precious stones and minerals. However, subsequent investigations by Fiji’s Mineral Resources Department revealed that the so-called precious stones were simply stalactites, common mineral formations rather than gemstones or gold.
Despite this, the cave’s discovery carries significant anthropological and historical implications, especially regarding the origins of the Nakorotubu indigenous people. Until now, the community only recognized one cave—Na Qara ni Mekenisi, also known as the Magnesium Cave. The revelation of this new cave raises vital questions about the ancestry and historical narratives of the inhabitants.
