Shift in mindset

Fiji’s Groundbreaking Recycling Revolution: Transforming Waste into Resources

In 2024, Fiji achieved remarkable success in recycling efforts, diverting an impressive 4,837 tonnes—almost five million kilograms—of recyclables through the initiatives of the Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF) and Waste Recyclers (Fiji) Ltd (WRFL). This significant milestone was announced by WRFL Managing Director Joseph Inoke during the recent launch of the “I Recycle Hub” at the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.

Inoke noted that while many of the materials collected are low-value recyclables, programs like these can transform waste into valuable resources. “The ripple effects of this initiative extend beyond the ministry,” he stated, stressing that it would motivate other government bodies and institutions to adopt better waste management practices. The launch signifies a shift in mindset and a commitment to sustainable practices within the government.

The initiative underscores the power of partnerships, as the Ministry of Environment collaborates with over 60 organizations spanning various sectors, including finance and education, to steer recyclables away from landfills. Inoke emphasized that the “I Recycle” program represents a pioneering approach in government-led recycling initiatives, reinforcing the message of leadership through example.

This year’s recycling efforts align closely with previous advancements in Fiji’s waste management practices. The Ministry of Climate Change and Environment had earlier embarked on its own recycling projects, aiming to enhance green practices within government offices. Permanent Secretary Dr. Sivendra Michael had previously highlighted the importance of effective waste management and encouraged other ministries to take similar actions, which is now being realized with the launch of this comprehensive recycling program.

Furthermore, the Pacific Recycling Foundation is urging collaboration to maintain the momentum established in 2024 and to address ongoing challenges in sustainable waste management. Founder Amitesh Deo noted the need for continued efforts to foster environmental responsibility in all sectors.

Overall, this development not only emphasizes the importance of recycling in protecting the environment but also offers a hopeful outlook on building sustainable communities through collective action. As more organizations join forces, Fiji is poised to set an inspiring example of how collaborative initiatives can lead to significant environmental change.
