The leader of the G11 coalition, Ioane Naivalurua, is focused on expanding the group from its current 11 members to a target of 18 or even 19. In remarks made to FBC News, Naivalurua conveyed his willingness to accept new members interested in joining his coalition. This announcement follows the recent integration of two Independent MPs from the opposition’s Group of 16, Shalen Kumar and Sachida Nand, into G11, boosting its ranks.

Naivalurua reiterated the coalition’s support for Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, highlighting a team-oriented strategy to tackle key issues facing Fiji. Both Kumar and Nand have recently voiced their support for the Constitution Amendment Bill 2025, thus aligning with Naivalurua’s vision for a broader coalition.

This development marks a significant change in Fiji’s political scene, particularly after the dissolution of the FijiFirst party, which resulted in a reshuffling of political alliances. As the political landscape evolves, two notable opposition factions have emerged: one under Naivalurua’s leadership and the other led by Inia Seruiratu.

The current situation breeds optimism for democratic participation in Fiji, as varied voices engage in important discussions regarding governance and policy. With elections on the horizon, these shifts may stimulate increased voter involvement, thereby enhancing the representation and accountability of leaders in the nation. The hope is that this evolving political atmosphere will lead to a more engaged electorate and a strengthening of democratic practices in Fiji.
