Fiji's Fishing and Forestry: A Sustainable Future for Economic Growth

Fiji’s Fishing and Forestry: A Sustainable Future for Economic Growth

The fisheries sector is a vital pillar of Fiji’s economy, having contributed $207.1 million in 2022, which represents around 8% of the nation’s export earnings. In a recent address to Parliament, Minister for Fisheries and Forestry Alitia Bainivalu highlighted that a significant portion—70%—of this contribution comes from offshore fisheries, primarily through tuna harvesting and processing. Inshore fisheries accounted for 25% of the contribution, while aquaculture, although still in its growing phase, contributed 5%.

These figures underline the crucial role that fisheries play in sustaining the livelihoods of many Fijians, especially those residing in coastal and rural communities. The Minister emphasized that the fisheries sector not only drives economic growth but also aligns with Fiji’s cultural heritage and environmental sustainability goals.

In line with this, Fiji is making marked advancements in its forestry sector as well. A successful partnership among the Government, Fiji Pine Ltd., and local landowners has resulted in over $500,000 of income for the Vanua o Waikatakata in Kadavu. This illustrates the potential for sustainable forest management to generate economic benefits for local communities.

Moreover, the newly-opened Nadarivatu Community-Based Forest Park emphasizes eco-tourism and environmental protection, showcasing how such initiatives can create income while raising awareness regarding nature conservation. Minister Bainivalu noted a significant achievement in Fiji’s National Tree-Planting Program, which has led to the planting of over 19 million trees and mangroves, pushing towards its ambitious goal of 30 million within 15 years.

The refreshed Strategic Development Plan focuses on sustainable forest management, forest landscape restoration, and creating more economic opportunities for landowners and communities. It reflects the proactive measures taken by the Fijian government to ensure that both the fisheries and forestry sectors thrive, bolstering economic resilience while also preserving the natural environment.

These developments signify a hopeful future for Fiji, representing the nation’s commitment to sustainability and environmental preservation, as it seeks to create new economic opportunities while safeguarding its unique ecosystems.
