Fijian Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Professor Biman Prasad, has publicly criticized Unity Fiji Leader Savenaca Narube for suggesting that Australia reconsider its budget support for Fiji. Prasad characterized Narube’s claims of mismanagement by the Coalition Government as unfounded and exaggerated, indicating that such statements could jeopardize the nation’s economic stability.
During the Climate Integrity Conference 2025 in Canberra, Narube made remarks demanding a reassessment of Australia’s financial involvement. In his counter-response, Prasad defended the legitimacy of the expenditures linked to Fiji’s participation in international climate discussions, specifically during COP29. He stressed that the claims about the size of Fiji’s delegation at these talks had been overstated, clarifying that most funding for the delegation came from international sources, rather than the Fijian government.
Prasad noted that Narube’s lack of experience at climate conferences undermines his ability to assess the delegation’s effectiveness accurately. He recalled that during the previous administration, Narube did not voice objections when a larger delegation attended COP23.
Prasad also acknowledged Australia’s pivotal role as a development partner for Fiji, supporting key sectors such as public health and education. He argued that Narube’s criticisms might not only be unfounded but could also disrespect Australian taxpayers who contribute to essential programs in Fiji.
This incident highlights the continuing political friction within Fiji regarding climate negotiations and economic governance. The dispute prompts a critical examination of resource allocation and governance in tackling climate challenges. By addressing criticisms head-on and promoting transparent engagement with stakeholders, the Fijian government can enhance its international cooperation strategies and advocate for the communities most affected by environmental changes. Through constructive dialogue and collaboration, there is potential for a stronger Fijian representation on the global stage.
