Fiji’s Policing Minister, Ioane Naivalurua, addressed Parliament this week, shedding light on the nation’s role in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking. He stressed that while Fiji lacks local methamphetamine manufacturing facilities, it is increasingly being utilized as a transit point for drug distribution, raising alarms about the impact this has on local communities. Naivalurua characterized the disposal of narcotics as “a form of death,” highlighting the pressing need for action.
In his remarks, Naivalurua pointed to the troubling reality that some individuals in Fiji are involved in actions facilitating these drug transshipments for personal gain, disregarding the welfare of their communities. However, he also noted the significant cooperation among various sectors, including non-governmental organizations, civil society, businesses, and faith-based groups, all working toward creating a safer environment.
This statement coincides with data shared by the Fiji Police Force, which confirmed there are no major drug manufacturing operations within the country. Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu indicated that although large-scale production is absent, there is a rising concern about smaller, makeshift home operations where individuals attempt to manufacture methamphetamine using toxic chemicals without proper knowledge. This practice poses severe risks not only to those involved but to the public as well.
In a positive development, there has been a reported 37 percent increase in drug raids across the nation, highlighting the proactive stance taken by law enforcement in confronting drug-related issues. This boost in police activity, combined with heightened community awareness and vigilance, suggests a hopeful trend in enhancing safety and reducing drug incidents in Fiji.
As efforts continue, both the police force and the community remain committed to tackling the challenges presented by drug trafficking and production.
