Fiji’s Ferry Controversy: Safety or Progress?

A chief in Fiji is urgently requesting that the government stop the registration and deployment of the high-speed ferry, Captain Inoke, due to safety concerns. Tu Navitilevu Ratu Emori Bolobolo stressed the importance of learning from the mistakes of other countries that have rushed similar acquisitions that later proved unsafe. He noted that the Captain Inoke, previously known as Harmony Flower, is currently under review for registration by the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF).

Ratu Emori expressed his concerns about the vessel’s structure, age, and safety, emphasizing that the local community’s welfare is his priority. He highlighted the potential risk of the Captain Inoke operating in Fijian waters without thorough inspections. Drawing from past incidents in New Zealand and Hawaii, he advocates for a cautious approach to maritime safety.

In contrast, George Goundar, founder of Goundar Shipping Ltd, which recently acquired the ferry, dismissed the allegations of structural challenges as unfounded. He defended the ferry’s design, emphasizing the environmental benefits of high-speed ferries over conventional vessels. Goundar pointed out that rival companies might be spreading misinformation out of jealousy and noted the significant costs associated with the ferry’s prolonged stay in Fiji due to bureaucratic delays.

He mentioned that the Captain Inoke is slated to service routes between Levuka, Natovi, Nabouwalu, and Ellington, and he has taken measures to expedite the approval process with relevant authorities, assuring that the ferry should be operational soon. Goundar criticized competitors for bringing older vessels into the market and believes that the upcoming ferry could enhance Fiji’s transportation options.
