Fiji’s Education Crisis: What’s Behind the Year Eight Examination Pass Rate Dilemma?

The Education Minister of Fiji, Aseri Radrodro, recently addressed Parliament regarding the fluctuating pass rates of the Year Eight Examination, highlighting issues that have persisted since 2016. He identified several contributing factors to this situation including overcrowded classrooms, an irrelevant curriculum, and insufficient monitoring of academic performance.

Minister Radrodro pointed out that the existing curriculum is not well aligned with student needs, interests, or the local context. He emphasized the importance of reviewing the Ministry of Education’s curriculum to better serve the students. Furthermore, he noted that high student-teacher ratios compromise the level of individual attention students receive, which is crucial for effective learning.

Behavioral issues and lack of discipline in classrooms are additional challenges faced by teachers and students alike. Furthermore, factors such as irregular attendance due to illness, family responsibilities, or lack of parental engagement in education were also acknowledged.
