Education Revamp: What’s Next for Fiji’s Students?

The Ministry of Education is set to reassess the recruitment policy for students entering Year 9 in 2025, according to Education Minister Aseri Radrodro. This review is part of a broader examination of the existing no-repeat policy, which has raised concerns regarding its effectiveness.

In the previous year, 19,396 students participated in the Fiji Year Eight Examination, achieving a 69 percent pass rate—equating to approximately 13,383 successful candidates while 6,012 students did not pass. Minister Radrodro noted the importance of addressing the challenges faced by students failing these external exams, suggesting that many students have advanced to Year 9 without adequate support or monitoring.

To better assist students who encounter difficulties, he urged parents and guardians to reach out to district offices for enrollment assistance. Additionally, the Ministry plans to introduce vocational learning opportunities for those who have not succeeded in their exams, highlighting a shift towards inclusive education.

Radrodro said, “There’s always a general question that has been raised, how do we cater for students who have failed?” The intention is to incorporate technical vocational education training as an option starting from Year 8 or Year 9, providing alternative pathways for students.

This year’s pass rate of 69 percent shows a slight improvement from the previous year, reflecting ongoing efforts to enhance educational outcomes.

It is hopeful that these changes will foster a more supportive educational environment and ensure that all students, regardless of their academic performance, have access to meaningful learning pathways.

In summary, the Ministry of Education’s review of the recruitment policy aims to better cater to the needs of students transitioning into secondary education, particularly focusing on those who might benefit from vocational training. This proactive approach signifies a commitment to enhancing educational support and outcomes for all learners in Fiji.
