Opposition Voices Concern Over Flawed Constitutional Amendments in Fiji

Fiji’s Constitutional Debate: A Flawed Process or Path to Reform?

Opposition MP Rinesh Sharma has openly criticized the government’s plan to amend the Constitution, labeling the amendment process as fundamentally flawed. During a recent parliamentary session, he called on Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to fully disclose the Constitution Amendment Bill’s contents to both Parliament and the people of Fiji.

Sharma intends to remain in the Opposition as an Independent MP and emphasized that Parliament could consider the amendments again in the future. He pointed out inconsistencies in the Prime Minister’s statements, indicating that the government seems more concentrated on rhetoric than delivering clear ideas to the Fijian public. He firmly stated, “I do not support the Motion to suspend the Standing Orders 6(5) and 92, nor do I support the motion under the Prime Minister’s name to amend the Constitution.”

This assertion notably contrasts with the previous week when Sharma and three other opposition members—Sanjay Kirpal, Shalen Kumar, and Sachida Nand—voted in favor of the government’s motion to suspend Standing Orders, allowing the Prime Minister to initiate the first reading of the Constitution Amendment Bill 2025. Although Sharma had previously indicated a willingness to amend specific parts of the Constitution to improve governance, he has now raised significant concerns about the amendment process and its transparency.

As discussions continue, there seem to be opportunities for genuine reform, with various factions within both the government and opposition addressing issues surrounding the concentration of executive power while advocating for a governance framework that is more reflective of the Fijian populace. These discussions highlight the crucial need for inclusivity and civic engagement to ensure any constitutional changes resonate with the rights and voices of all Fijians.

Amidst this evolving political climate, there is a hopeful perspective for the future. Ongoing dialogues among lawmakers could foster a governance model that genuinely captures the aspirations of Fiji’s diverse population, reinforcing democratic values and unity across the nation.
