Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed his support for the proposed Code of Conduct Bill, which aims to enhance the integrity and accountability framework for public office holders in Fiji. This initiative aligns with the legislative agenda introduced by President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, who emphasized the importance of fostering confidence in public institutions during his opening speech in Parliament.
The Code of Conduct Bill is designed to improve the standards of behavior expected from those in public office while ensuring that any complaints regarding their conduct are handled effectively. Mr. Rabuka underscored the need for public officials to uphold the integrity of their roles, saying, “Holding their offices in the highest regard all the time [is essential], not allowing it to be brought to disrepute by our individual actions.”
In light of previous discussions surrounding accountability within the Coalition Government, Rabuka reiterated his concerns about the conduct of Members of Parliament (MPs), noting that delivering respectful dialogue and constructive debate is essential. This comes as he also addressed the recent shift towards open voting procedures in Parliament, where MPs must declare their votes publicly—an initiative that has been viewed positively as a step towards fostering transparency and promoting accountability.
Ratu Naiqama’s call for responsible enjoyment of freedom during parliamentary debates indicates a push for a more constructive political environment, reinforcing the need for respect and accountability among party supporters, especially on social media platforms.
These efforts signify a vital move toward improving governance in Fiji. By instituting measures such as the Code of Conduct Bill, the government hopes to enhance public trust and establish clearer expectations for the behavior of its leaders, which could lead to a more engaged and participatory citizenry.
The collective focus on accountability and transparency bodes well for the future governance structure in Fiji, promoting a healthier political landscape and reinforcing democratic values.
