As Fiji gears up to observe the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has urged all citizens to unite in the fight against this pressing issue, emphasizing it as a shared responsibility.

In a national address, Rabuka pointed out that GBV is a widespread problem permeating every community in Fiji, and efforts to combat it must extend beyond the 16-day campaign. He advocated for ongoing action throughout the year to address this societal concern effectively. “Gender-based violence is an issue that demands our collective action—not just during these 16 days, but every day of the year, every year,” he stated.

The Prime Minister highlighted that preventing violence against women and girls transcends social implications and is a matter of national significance. He explained how such violence disrupts families, undermines community strength, and obstructs national progress. “Violence robs families of their stability, communities of their strength, and the nation of its potential,” Rabuka remarked, stressing that a proactive approach to prevention must coincide with a commitment to justice.

Rakesh Chand, Deputy Director of Community-Oriented Policing, echoed the Prime Minister’s sentiments, particularly urging parents to remain vigilant as the festive season approaches. Chand noted the tendency for domestic violence incidents to increase during this time and encouraged families to cultivate safer environments.

This year’s campaign, themed “From Prevention to Justice, Ending Violence, Impunity Against Women and Girls in All Spaces,” aims to bolster efforts in preventing violence while ensuring accountability for perpetrators and creating secure environments for women and girls.

Rabuka’s impassioned address calls for a united response from all citizens, institutions, and communities in the battle against GBV. He concluded by stating, “Ending gender-based violence is everyone’s responsibility. Together, we can create a society where women and girls can live without fear, and justice is not just a promise but a reality.”

The campaign kicks off tomorrow, inviting Fijians to engage in activities and discussions designed to foster meaningful change.

This collective initiative serves as a beacon of hope for a safer Fiji, highlighting the power of community action in creating an environment where all individuals can thrive free from violence and fear. Every effort counts toward a brighter future.
