The National Coordinating Committee has been reactivated to spearhead the establishment of the newly formed Department of Children in Fiji. This initiative follows the passage of critical legislation, including the Child Justice Act and the Child Care and Protection Act, which aims to enhance the welfare and protection of children across the nation.
Minister for Women and Children, Sashi Kiran, emphasized the significance of these laws, stating they pave the way for a new era in safeguarding the rights of children in Fiji. “These laws represent a new chapter for the children of Fiji, a chapter that will see them protected, supported, and given the chance to thrive in a safer, more nurturing society,” Ms. Kiran remarked.
The ministry is working diligently to translate these legislative frameworks into actionable programs, collaborating with other governmental bodies to ensure adequate budgeting for child protection efforts and necessary policy amendments. The revival of the National Coordinating Committee is a crucial part of this drive, as it will focus on developing a National Action Plan aimed at preventing all forms of child abuse.
Additionally, with support from UNICEF, the ministry has embarked on initiatives to strengthen community capacity, including training community counselors to better assist children who are victims of abuse. “We recognize that much of the trauma experienced by children is intergenerational, indicating a need for holistic interventions that include parental support,” added Ms. Kiran. Plans are underway to introduce a parenting app to assist parents in accessing positive parenting strategies.
The government’s renewed commitment to improving child protection is particularly notable in the context of alarming statistics depicting the prevalence of child abuse in the country. Recent reports indicate a decline in child abuse cases from 2022 to 2023; however, the figures remain concerning, highlighting the ongoing challenges.
While the statistics paint a grim picture, the initiatives being put forth by the Ministry of Women and Children offer a hopeful perspective. The collaboration with various stakeholders and the emphasis on preventive measures through education and community involvement signify a robust response to the challenges facing children in Fiji.
This revitalized commitment aims to foster a safer environment where every child can thrive, encouraging a future in which children are seen as valuable members of society deserving of protection and support. The proactive measures underscore a determination to create a nurturing atmosphere that can lead to positive, lasting change in the lives of Fiji’s children.
