The Fijian government is actively working to improve water accessibility in rural communities, a critical issue highlighted by Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo. He recently announced the identification of 41 new borehole sites intended to provide reliable access to clean water for communities that currently lack this essential resource. These projects are projected for completion by July of this year.
Minister Vosarogo stressed the importance of ensuring access to clean and potable water as a top priority for the ministry, which is making significant efforts to accelerate groundwater projects in affected areas. The construction of these boreholes will be undertaken by private companies that have been thoroughly vetted to ensure they comply with safety standards for delivering drinking water.

Recently, the Ministry has successfully provided groundwater access to over 2,300 households nationwide, underscoring ongoing efforts to enhance public health and living conditions in rural settings.
In his comments, the Minister highlighted the urgency of addressing ‘red zone’ areas where water infrastructure is inadequate, calling for prompt action in regions where the existing water network is lacking. Additionally, this new endeavor builds on previous government efforts, including a major commitment to construct 1,700 boreholes with an investment of $5 million, aiming to improve water access in both urban and rural areas.
