Fiji is taking proactive steps to revitalize its banana export sector, which has faced significant challenges in recent years. The Ministry of Agriculture reports a dramatic decrease in banana exports, plummeting from 21 tonnes in 2016 to under five tonnes currently, despite a noted increase in domestic production. Minister for Agriculture Vatimi Rayalu emphasizes that the banana sector has traditionally been an important component of Fiji’s agricultural landscape, yet recent hurdles have hindered growth.
The revitalization strategy announced is aimed at rebuilding Fiji’s presence in the global banana market by enhancing production, enforcing biosecurity measures, and preparing for exports. Central to this plan is the initiative to mass-produce disease-resistant seedlings, which is expected to bolster yields and offer protection against various biosecurity threats.
