The Fijian Ministry of Disaster Management is taking significant steps to bolster disaster preparedness across the nation by establishing multi-purpose evacuation centers in all four divisions and retrofitting existing facilities to align with humanitarian standards. Minister Sakiasi Ditoka announced that $1 million has been set aside to renovate 20 existing evacuation centers, in addition to constructing two new facilities within the current financial year.
This initiative builds on the recently successful retrofitting of the Evacuation Center in Yavusania, Nadi, which was launched with the support of the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and carried out in partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Save the Children Fiji. The refurbishment of the Yavusania center, which cost $203,250, is designed to provide a safe haven for vulnerable communities during emergencies and act as a central hub for community engagement, thereby bolstering the area’s overall resilience and safety.
Minister Ditoka highlighted that these developments exemplify the government’s dedication to enhancing community resilience against the impacts of climate change. He acknowledged the crucial support from KOICA and IOM, reiterating the importance of collaborative efforts in achieving these objectives.
Fiji’s proactive measures reflect a commitment not only to safeguard its citizens from natural disasters but also to instill a culture of preparedness and resilience for the future. By integrating community needs into disaster management strategies, Fiji is laying the groundwork for a safer and more secure environment for all its residents. This initiative serves as an inspiring model of how nations can work together to address the challenges posed by climate change and natural disasters.
