The Fijian government is advancing plans to create a medicinal cannabis industry aimed exclusively at exports, with the intention of diversifying the economy, generating jobs, and positioning the country in the fast-evolving global market. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, shared details in Parliament regarding ongoing consultations and feasibility studies, emphasizing the industry’s substantial economic potential.
The government’s initiative is propelled by the global demand for medicinal cannabis products. Kamikamica stated that this export-focused industry could broaden Fiji’s economic base and open new revenue channels. He expressed confidence in Fiji’s ability to become a significant player in the expanding global medicinal cannabis market, proposing that the development of this industry could create a vibrant ecosystem that supports agriculture, manufacturing, and research while fostering job opportunities.
Aligned with Fiji’s larger economic strategy to boost export revenues and diversify from traditional sectors, Kamikamica noted the potential for significant revenue generation. Following the Cabinet’s approval of this initiative in August 2023, a task force with representatives from 12 government departments has engaged in comprehensive consultations across Fiji’s Central, Western, and Northern Divisions. In total, 17 consultation events were conducted, engaging over 500 participants, including community members and stakeholders. An impressive 75% of those consulted supported the legalization of medicinal cannabis, highlighting a strong public consensus, particularly among male farmers aged 36 to 45.
Kamikamica emphasized the broader implications of this industry, focusing on empowering local communities in rural and maritime regions and fostering agricultural development to create much-needed jobs. Despite some delays in the legislative process, the government is dedicated to presenting the bill for the medicinal cannabis industry by 2025. Kamikamica addressed concerns about potential risks associated with theft and illicit market activities, assuring that rigorous security measures, based on successful approaches from countries like Australia, will be implemented to safeguard the industry.
