Fiji has officially unveiled its National E-Commerce Strategy 2025-2029, a decisive move aimed at transforming the nation’s economy through digital trade. This innovative strategy, launched by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica, seeks to integrate Fijian businesses into the growing global e-commerce market, which is expanding annually by 8.5%.
In his keynote speech, Kamikamica highlighted the importance of this initiative in allowing Fijian-made products to reach international markets more efficiently. He expressed a hopeful vision of economic empowerment where all Fijians—ranging from rural farmers to urban tech-savvy entrepreneurs—can leverage the digital economy to thrive.
Permanent Secretary for Trade, Shaheen Ali, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the urgency of embracing digital commerce. He pointed out that while the strategy opens up many opportunities, it also comes with challenges, including the need for improved digital payment systems and logistics. The government aims to collaborate with financial institutions to ensure that the necessary infrastructure supports Fijian entrepreneurs.
Kamikamica also stressed the strategy’s role in promoting gender inclusivity, particularly for women entrepreneurs who can benefit from digital platforms without the need for physical stores. This element is crucial for expanding access to the global marketplace and fostering innovation.
The establishment of a National E-Commerce Committee will oversee the implementation of the strategy, ensuring that progress is monitored and key performance indicators are met. The strategy is designed to empower Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and enhance overall export competitiveness as part of Fiji’s broader National Development Plan.
Overall, this initiative is not just about modernizing Fiji’s economy; it represents an inspiring commitment to inclusion and empowerment. With ongoing investments in digital infrastructure and literacy, there is a promising future for Fijian entrepreneurship and economic resilience in the rapidly evolving digital landscape. As Fiji embraces this digital transformation, local businesses are poised for unprecedented growth and engagement in the global economy.
