The Australian Government has announced a significant financial commitment of FJ$72 million (AU$50 million) in budget support to Fiji for the upcoming 2024-2025 fiscal year. This vital agreement was formalized during a signing ceremony attended by Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, and the outgoing Australian High Commissioner to Fiji, Ewen McDonald.
This funding is part of the ‘Vuvale Partnership’ between Australia and Fiji, which is aimed at enhancing public financial management, promoting economic reforms, and building social and climate resilience within Fiji. Professor Prasad underscored the crucial role of this support, stating that it will help implement vital reforms to enhance efficiency in public financial management, foster sustainable and inclusive growth, and ensure that essential services reach the most vulnerable populations.
The new funds add to the substantial support Australia has provided over the past five years, totaling nearly FJ$456 million in grants. This financial backing has been instrumental in helping Fiji navigate economic challenges, including the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, while facilitating critical investments in sectors like health, education, and infrastructure.
Australia’s commitment for the 2024-2025 fiscal year also focuses on financing essential projects that are fundamental for national development.
