Fiji Airports Ltd has entered into a significant contract worth JPY1.18 billion (approximately FJ$18 million) with Japan’s TEC International, marking a pivotal milestone in its aviation modernization initiative aimed at enhancing aviation security across the nation’s airports. This project is a collaborative effort with Japan, reflecting the strong ties between the two nations in fostering safer skies and resilient aviation infrastructure throughout the Pacific region.

Under this agreement, crucial improvements will be made to air navigation systems, emergency preparedness, and flight procedure design. Fiji Airports’ CEO Mesake Nawari emphasized the importance of this collaboration, which aligns with the previous commitments made during an Exchange of Notes and Grant Agreement signed last year by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and Japan’s ambassador to Fiji, Rokuichiro Michii.

The project is designed to bolster the safety of aircraft operations and improve transport infrastructure capacity for sustainable growth. It includes essential equipment and technical support provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), outlining key components such as the installation of two VHF Omnidirectional Radio Beacons (VOR/DME) at Momi in Nadi and Labasa Airport, as well as the deployment of five airport rescue firefighting vehicles and three rescue boats at Nadi International Airport.

Nawari mentioned that staff training has been a crucial aspect of this agreement, with Air Traffic Management and Aeronautical Information Service officers gaining accreditation to design new approach procedures based on VOR/DME technology. This will facilitate updates to existing flight procedures, enhancing the efficiency and safety of aviation operations at key airports.

This development forms an integral part of Fiji Airports Ltd’s broader modernization strategy, ensuring compliance with global standards and improving air traffic services throughout the nation’s airspace. The signing ceremony for the contract took place recently at the Fiji Embassy in Japan, with Nawari and General Manager of ATM and Operations Amit Singh in attendance.

The project is expected to not only strengthen Fiji’s aviation capabilities but also enhance regional connectivity, fortifying its position as a vital transportation hub in the Pacific. The ongoing support from Japan exemplifies a shared commitment to fostering sustainable growth and safety in aviation across the region.
