Fijian middle-distance runner Yeshnil Karan showcased an impressive performance at the 2025 Chemist Warehouse Australian National Athletics Championships held in Perth, where he set two personal bests and entered Fiji’s all-time top rankings for both the 1500m and the 3000m steeplechase events.
In his second steeplechase race and his debut on Australian soil, Karan clocked a remarkable time of 9 minutes 2.08 seconds, finishing eighth in a highly competitive final that included two Australian Olympians. This achievement represents a phenomenal improvement of 16 seconds over his previous best, propelling him to second place on Fiji’s all-time list—surpassing the mark set by Olympian Davendra Rakash Singh back in 1992, while only trailing behind the legendary Usaia Sotutu, whose record has stood for 44 years.
Karan didn’t stop there; in the 1500m race, he achieved another personal best of 3 minutes 51.14 seconds, improving his time by two seconds, thus overtaking Sotutu’s long-standing record from 1971. Now, Karan ranks behind only national record holder Rick Kermode, who recorded his time in Auckland over four decades ago.
These remarkable feats mark a significant moment not only in Karan’s career but also for Fijian athletics as a whole. His rapid ascent and unwavering dedication continue to inspire upcoming athletes within the nation. Karan’s achievements, including gold medals at the Commonwealth Games, the Pacific Games, and his participation in events like the Pacific Mini Games, showcase his commitment and highlight the future potential of Fijian athletics on the global stage.
Coming from Yaladro, Tavua, and educated at Tavua College, Karan’s story is one of hard work, tenacity, and a deep passion for his sport, serving as an embodiment of hope for aspiring athletes in Fiji. His recent enhancements in performance are not merely personal triumphs but provide a collective motivation for young Fijian athletes to pursue excellence in athletics. With continued support and determination, Karan’s journey hints at a bright future for both himself and the sport of athletics in Fiji.
