Fijian Defence Minister Pio Tikoduadua assured the public that soldiers deployed with the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) are safe and their operations are not impacted by the heightened tensions currently affecting the Middle East. During a recent parliamentary session, Tikoduadua clarified that only one Fijian officer is stationed with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) while other personnel are actively serving under the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO).
The Minister emphasized that Fijian troops are well-prepared and follow strict Standard Operating Procedures, supported by comprehensive contingency plans for evacuation if necessary. There is continuous communication with the headquarters of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces to ensure the well-being of peacekeeping personnel. Tikoduadua highlighted that safeguarding peacekeepers is a top priority for the Coalition Government, which receives daily reports from the field to quickly address any arising issues.
Additionally, the Minister mentioned ongoing discussions with the United Arab Emirates regarding the temporary positioning of Fijian troops and equipment to boost operational readiness. A government delegation is scheduled to travel to the Middle East early next year to evaluate the situation on the ground, reassess reinforcement strategies, and acknowledge the assistance provided to Fijian peacekeepers.
He also noted plans to possibly station seven of the fourteen Bushmaster vehicles in the UNDOF mission area, though these efforts face challenges due to restrictions imposed by both Syria and Israel regarding the entry of military vehicles.
This proactive approach reflects the commitment of the Fijian government to ensure the safety of its personnel and support international peacekeeping efforts in these challenging times. As global threats evolve, the measures taken by Fiji demonstrate its dedication to maintaining peace and security, fostering a stronger international collaboration in conflict zones.
