The tribunal hearing regarding allegations of misconduct against suspended Director of Public Prosecution, Christopher Pryde, is ongoing this morning at the Court of Appeal in Veiuto, Suva. Today’s proceedings are set to feature testimonies from several key figures, including Minister for Sugar, Charan Jeath Singh, Permanent Secretary for Finance, Shiri Goundar, Acting Chief Justice Justice Salesi Temo, and the Secretary for the Judicial Services Commission.
The tribunal is primarily focused on allegations of misconduct connected to Pryde’s role. Should the tribunal find sufficient evidence, it has the authority to recommend his removal as DPP to His Excellency the President.
Key points of interest include a notable incident from February 28, 2023, when Pryde was seen conversing with Sayed-Khaiyum for over 45 minutes, coinciding with an active investigation into Sayed-Khaiyum by the Criminal Investigation Department, with relevant information already in the office of the DPP. Additionally, it has come to light that Pryde received a monthly superannuation payment of US$1,000 as of December 4, 2023, without proper authorization from the Judicial Services Commission, the Office of the Attorney-General, or the Office of the President.
The tribunal session is being presided over by Justices Anare Tuilevuka, Samuela Qica, and Chaitanya Lakshman, with proceedings scheduled to commence at noon.
This situation highlights the importance of accountability and integrity within the judicial system, and while it raises concerns, it also underscores the ongoing commitment to uphold rule of law and due process. The outcomes of this hearing could pave the way for reforms and greater transparency in the governance of public offices.
