The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua has unveiled its 2025 Shop N Save Super Rugby squad, comprising 32 talented Flying Fijians, including the national co-captain. This announcement marks the culmination of a successful off-season recruitment campaign, featuring all five new signings hailing from the ranks of the Flying Fijians, poised to make significant contributions in the upcoming season. Among the squad members are three athletes who recently secured Silver Medals in Rugby 7s at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The development squad showcases promising young Fijian players on a pathway to future accolades.
Head Coach Glen Jackson expressed optimism regarding the team’s composition, highlighting a well-rounded mix of experience and youth. He mentioned, “We haven’t lost many players from last year, and the ones we’ve brought in have significant overseas experience.” With players like Joe Tamani returning from France, the team boasts a solid balance.
For the first time in the team’s history, the Fijian Drua has appointed co-captains: hooker Tevita Ikanivere and halfback Frank Lomani. Ikanivere, with 38 appearances and 10 tries, is a familiar face in the leadership role, previously guiding the Drua and also co-captaining the Flying Fijians. Lomani, the most seasoned player in the squad, has 53 appearances, including 28 for the Drua, and is among the select few in the squad who’ve scored 100 Super Rugby Pacific points.
Ikanivere expressed his gratitude for the leadership role, stating, “It is a very big honour and a pleasure for me to be chosen.” Lomani added, “I’m really excited… this team has come a long way.”
The squad has strengthened with the inclusion of Peni Ravai, a 50-Test capped Flying Fijian joining from the Queensland Reds, and Inia Tabuavou, who arrives from Racing 92 in France. Vuate Karawalevu, who played for the NSW Waratahs, and Silver Medalist Ponipate Loganimasi, who recently shone in the National 15’s side, also enrich the roster. Additionally, flanker Joseva Tamani returns from Colomiers Rugby Club in France.
The squad features a powerhouse lineup across various positions, with a commitment to utilizing only Flying Fijian talent.
The announcement showcases the Fijian Drua’s determination to build a competitive edge as they head into the 2025 season, incorporating a blend of seasoned athletes and promising newcomers. This commitment bodes well for both the team’s performance and the development of rugby talent in Fiji.
In summary, the Drua’s squad announcement highlights a strategic approach to recruitment while honoring Fijian rugby talent, setting an encouraging stage for the upcoming season in the Super Rugby Pacific. The community can look forward to a season filled with homegrown talent, leadership, and the pursuit of excellence on the rugby field.
