The Fijian Drua Foundation was officially launched at the Tanoa Plaza in Suva, with ambitious goals focused on advancing rugby development in Fiji. The foundation serves as the charitable arm of the Drua franchise and primarily funds the Drua Academy. Future plans include expanding the academy to accommodate younger players in the Under-14 and Under-15 grades and introducing a girls’ team.
Mark Evans, the CEO of the Drua, announced that he would serve as a trustee along with notable figures such as James Sowane of Tewaka, solicitor Mosese Naivalu, and Naomi Vuibureta from Fiji Airways. Former Fiji men’s rugby sevens coach Ben Ryan will also lend his expertise, with another high-profile trustee to be revealed soon.
One of the main objectives of the Drua Academy is to retain young Fijian rugby talent on the islands, preventing them from moving abroad at an early age and potentially representing other nations. Players like Virimi Vakatawa and Sevu Reece are examples of athletes who have made the leap overseas. Evans articulated a vision where the academy would provide a clear pathway for young players to develop their skills while remaining within their communities, ultimately nurturing homegrown talent for the Drua’s ongoing participation in Super Rugby Pacific.
Evans expressed optimism that as the academy develops, it will not only diminish the exodus of local talent but also enhance the competitiveness of the Drua in the Super Rugby league. All players enrolled in the academy will receive financial support, team kits, season tickets, and the opportunity to continue competing for their schools.
Additionally, the foundation plans to focus on health, education, and social impact initiatives, targeting remote communities and implementing resilience projects in schools across Fiji. The foundation aims to increase access to sports in underserved areas, fostering community cohesion and promoting the importance of health and inclusivity.
Evans added that the foundation’s efforts will extend beyond Viti Levu, reaching out to the outer islands and highlands. This commitment to grassroots development within Fiji is a hopeful sign for the future of Fijian rugby and the well-being of its youth.
In summary, the establishment of the Fijian Drua Foundation illustrates a strategic step towards nurturing local talent, promoting inclusivity, and fostering a culture of resilience and health in the community. Through these efforts, the Drua looks to strengthen its roots within Fijian society while building a robust rugby future.
