The Fiji women’s hockey team kicked off their Oceania Pacific Cup campaign with an impressive 9-1 victory over Samoa at the National Hockey Centre in Suva. Head coach Alison Southey expressed her satisfaction with the team’s performance, which featured several experienced players who have previously competed in both the Pacific Games and the recent World Cup in Oman. Notable players include Catherine Fabiano, Divyankar Kumar, Melba Nautu, and Maxine Edwards.
Southey emphasized the positive momentum of starting the tournament with a win, stating, “We’re optimistic and are taking it one game at a time. We’re focused on implementing all that we practiced during training.” The coach noted that the team adhered closely to their game plan and praised the hard work the players have put in over the last few months.
The four-day tournament will not only highlight the skills of seasoned players but also provide a platform for emerging talents and debutants to shine. Both the Fiji men’s and women’s teams have entered two squads in this tournament, identified as Fiji and Fiji Warriors, which Southey believes greatly benefits local athletes by giving them valuable exposure.
Southey pointed out an area for improvement, particularly in defense, asserting that tightening their defensive strategies will contribute to their ongoing success. With about five to six players having participated in the Pacific Games and another six who competed at the Oman World Cup, the squad’s depth and experience are promising for their future matches.
After their opening match, the Fiji women’s team faced Tonga in their second game scheduled for later that day. The tournament features seven countries and a total of 16 teams vying for victory, with the competition set to conclude on Thursday.
This remarkable win not only establishes Fiji as a strong contender but also fosters hope for the team’s continuous growth and success in the sport. As the tournament progresses, fans can look forward to seeing how the women’s team utilizes their camaraderie and skills to push towards more victories.
