Fiji Water contributes significantly to the Fijian economy, paying $100 million in taxes each year. This information was shared by Craig Cooper, the Executive Director and General Manager of the Wonderful Company, during the Fiji Institute of Chartered Accountants convention held in Nadi. Cooper emphasized the company’s longstanding presence in Fiji, stating their commitment to the local community as they provide jobs for 800 Fijians, both through Fiji Water and its partner Neptune Pacific Direct Line.

Cooper noted that Fiji Water remains the country’s most famous export, with about 80% of its products heading to the United States. He explained that Neptune Shipping plays a crucial role in their logistics and export processes, having expanded its fleet from three to eleven ships since its acquisition in 2007, which has improved shipping reliability and helped lower costs for local businesses importing goods.

In an exciting new development, Fiji Water has purchased land in Vanua Levu as part of efforts to diversify Fiji’s agricultural sector. This initiative aims to foster economic growth by developing a nursery for crops such as limes and mangoes. Cooper indicated that seedlings will be sourced from California, and biosecurity officials have already inspected them for compatibility with local conditions. This venture aligns with broader government efforts to boost agriculture and decrease the country’s reliance on tourism.

Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica praised the investment, stating that it represents a significant opportunity for the Fijian people and the economy. As Fiji Water expands its agricultural initiatives, the project is viewed as a vital step in creating sustainable practices, enhancing food security, and generating new job opportunities.

The positive trajectory of Fiji Water’s projects highlights the potential for economic diversification in Fiji, offering hope for a robust future that incorporates modern agricultural practices while empowering local farmers and communities. This commitment to development demonstrates a proactive approach towards building a resilient economy that can withstand global challenges.
