Fiji’s Defence and Veteran Affairs Minister, Pio Tikoduadua, has conveyed a strong message urging Japan to take an active role in stabilizing the Indo-Pacific region. In a written interview with The Yomiuri Shimbun, Tikoduadua highlighted concerns over escalating strategic competition in the region, particularly due to China’s increasing influence.

He emphasized that Japan’s consistent, practical, and respectful approach towards Pacific leadership can significantly contribute to regional stability. Ahead of an important regional forum in Tokyo, Tikoduadua expressed his hopes for Japan to continue enhancing maritime safety, disaster response readiness, and support for regional institutions.

Attending the Japan Pacific Islands Defence Dialogue (JPIDD), Tikoduadua expressed enthusiasm for engaging in practical discussions that would lead to tangible improvements in maritime operations and community resilience. He underscored the importance of fostering collaboration with other nations, particularly in aggregating maritime data and coordinating disaster relief efforts.

As one of the three Pacific island nations with a military, Fiji plays a pivotal role in regional security and cooperation. Recent developments, such as the Solomon Islands signing a security agreement with China, have raised concerns about the potential fragmentation of the region. Tikoduadua noted that such moves could hinder regional consensus, complicating efforts to maintain unity.

Fiji’s growing partnership with Japan is evident, as Japan plans to supply patrol vessels and defense equipment to Fiji under its Official Security Assistance program. Tikoduadua commended Japan’s support as “transparent and aligned with our priorities” and called for continued engagement from Japan to ensure stability and cooperation in the region.

This collaboration reflects a hopeful trajectory for the Indo-Pacific, emphasizing the importance of partnership and dialogue in navigating the complexities of regional security.
