DATEC (Fiji) Pte Ltd and the Fiji Meteorological Services (FMS) have announced the launch of a new digital recovery system aimed at improving the efficiency and responsiveness of the FMS during extreme weather events. This innovative initiative enhances national resilience and ensures operational continuity, promoting digital governance and infrastructure resilience within the meteorological service.

Misaeli Funaki, FMS director, stated that this implementation is a pivotal advancement for Fiji’s meteorological services, highlighting its focus on modernization. “This project isn’t just about infrastructure; it’s about modernization at its core. It represents a profound shift in how we operate, how we serve, and how we protect our communities,” he emphasized. The new system is designed to remain operational during emergencies, directly supporting FMS’s mission to safeguard lives and property, even in challenging circumstances.

This robust and geographically redundant disaster recovery environment is set to enhance the agency’s capabilities in managing and analyzing meteorological data, thereby enabling faster response times and more accurate public advisories. Vinit Nand, CEO of Datec Fiji, echoed the importance of the partnership with FMS, viewing it as a significant collaboration in strengthening national readiness against climate-related challenges.

“FMS has been crucial in ensuring the success of the new system,” Nand remarked, praising the support from Datec in advancing this digital solution. The initiative is aligned with Fiji’s broader efforts to adopt sustainable and tech-enabled public services, promising a more connected, secure, and prepared nation.

This recent advancement comes on the heels of previous initiatives, including a $27 million grant from Japan aimed at developing meteorological infrastructure that further enhances Fiji’s disaster response capabilities. Fiji’s ongoing strategic partnerships and investments reflect a hopeful trajectory towards improved safety and preparedness in the face of climate change, showcasing the nation’s commitment to regional leadership in meteorology and disaster management.

As Fiji continues its efforts in enhancing disaster preparedness and resilience, the integration of advanced technologies and collaborations with international partners positions the nation to effectively tackle future climate-related challenges.
