Fiji and the United Arab Emirates have taken an important step in maritime collaboration by formalizing a new agreement that enables mutual recognition of seafarers’ professional qualifications. This Memorandum of Understanding was signed on January 14, 2026, in Abu Dhabi during the 16th International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Assembly.

Fiji’s delegation was led by Naisa Tuinaceva, the Assistant Minister for Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport, while the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure represented the Emirati side in concluding this pivotal agreement. The new deal facilitates the recognition of Certificates of Competency issued by both countries, which is expected to significantly expand employment opportunities for Fijian seafarers in the UAE maritime sector as well as in other jurisdictions.

Moreover, the agreement adheres to Regulation I/10 of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), ensuring that the certification standards align with internationally recognized criteria. Officials have indicated that this MOU marks a substantial progression in strengthening bilateral cooperation within the maritime industry, ultimately enhancing the global mobility of Fiji’s skilled seafaring workforce.

This development not only benefits the economies of both nations but also paves the way for increased professional opportunities for Fijian seafarers in a growing global maritime market, showcasing a commitment to enhancing employment and skills within the industry.
