Fiji’s tourism sector is celebrating its resilience and adaptability, having navigated through various challenges over several decades. According to Fantasha Lockington, the Chief Executive of the Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association (FHTA), the industry has weathered political changes, natural disasters, and a global pandemic, all while remaining a consistent and trusted voice for operators and communities.

Since its inception in 1965, the FHTA has played a pivotal role in advocating for tourism operators and suppliers. Lockington emphasized how the association started with a small group of dedicated hoteliers passionate about growing the industry. Today, it stands committed to ensuring a stronger and more equitable future for the sector, particularly highlighting how the COVID-19 pandemic underscored the industry’s importance and led to increased government consultation on economic decisions affecting tourism.

FHTA President Narend Kumar pointed out the collective commitment of its members as the cornerstone of the industry’s growth. He stressed the importance of honoring the contributions of previous leaders who laid the foundations for today’s vibrant tourism landscape. As the association marks its 60th anniversary, there is a sense of unity and shared purpose among its members.

Reflecting on the broader tourism narrative in Fiji, the sector has morphologically evolved over the past seventy years from modest beach resorts into a robust component of the economy, significantly contributing to Fiji’s GDP and creating employment opportunities for thousands. As the industry enters a phase known as “Tourism 2.0,” it faces the dual challenge of maintaining its unique offerings while remaining competitive on a global scale.

With a focus on innovation, sustainable practices, and community engagement, the FHTA aims to tackle the pressing issues that have long been overlooked, including skill shortages in the labor market. Efforts to align vocational training with industry needs are critical for ensuring sustainable economic growth.

As Fiji navigates its historic and natural challenges, the commitment to building a more resilient tourism sector offers hope for the future, positioning the nation as a model for sustainable tourism practices. The ongoing evolution shows a conscious effort toward creating an inclusive tourism landscape that uplifts local communities while captivating visitors with Fiji’s natural beauty and cultural richness.

By fostering collaboration between government and industry stakeholders, Fiji is not just aiming for recovery but also embracing opportunities for diversification and innovation in the tourism sector. The future looks bright as efforts are made to turn past adversities into stepping stones for a sustainable and flourishing tourism industry.
