Deputy Prime Minister and Civil Aviation Minister Viliame Gavoka has emphasized Fiji’s commitment to making aviation a key driver of economic growth, with a strong focus on enhancing regional access, ensuring operational resilience, and promoting environmental sustainability. These remarks were made during the Changi Aviation Summit held in Singapore, which gathered over 400 participants, including aviation ministers, directors-general, and industry leaders from around the globe, with notable representation from Pacific Island nations.

On the sidelines of the Summit, Gavoka engaged in discussions with aviation ministers from Pacific Small Island States and met with Toshiyuki Onuma, President of the ICAO Council, to address critical issues surrounding regional air connectivity. These discussions underscored the urgency of improving aviation infrastructure and services to better connect island nations.

Gavoka also prepared for the upcoming 4th Regional Aviation Ministers Meeting by identifying primary challenges facing the Pacific aviation sector, notably resilience and sustainability. His involvement in a ministerial panel titled “Creating Growth in a Disruptive World: Opportunities, Challenges, and Collaboration,” allowed him to exchange insights with international aviation leaders on navigating these challenges.

A significant point raised by Gavoka was the necessity for continuous technical assistance to aid in developing and adopting Sustainable Aviation Fuel, which is paramount not only for Fiji but also for all Pacific Small Island Developing States. This focus on sustainable practices showcases Fiji’s proactive stance in addressing environmental concerns while promoting economic progress in the aviation sector.
