High Commissioner Jagnath Sami, Fiji’s new envoy to Sri Lanka, has officially begun his role after presenting his Letters of Credence to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo on Thursday, July 24, 2025. This handover marks an important milestone in the diplomatic relationship between Fiji and Sri Lanka, signifying an enhanced collaboration between the two nations.
High Commissioner Sami, who is notably the second Fijian High Commissioner residing in New Delhi to be accredited to Sri Lanka, emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral ties during his subsequent meeting with Hon. Vijitha Herath, the Sri Lankan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism. Their discussions focused on exploring areas of mutual interest, which could further bolster the economic and cultural collaboration between Fiji and Sri Lanka.
This appointment is reminiscent of Fiji’s increasing diplomatic engagements on a global scale, similar to its recent diplomatic moves in Canada and India, where new High Commissioners have taken office to reinforce ties. Such efforts are pivotal as they align with Fiji’s strategy to enhance its presence globally and foster international partnerships that promote sustainable development and mutual growth.
As High Commissioner Sami sets forth on his diplomatic journey, there is a hopeful outlook for future developments that could enrich Fiji’s international relations and contribute to a collaborative spirit in the region. The commitment to fostering strong ties between Fiji and Sri Lanka represents a shared aspiration for peace, prosperity, and cooperation.
