Team Fiji demonstrated outstanding performance at the Pacific Mini Games in Koror, Palau, clinching second place with an impressive total of 27 gold, 30 silver, and 24 bronze medals. This marks a significant improvement from their previous performance at the 2022 Saipan Games, showcasing the team’s growth and dedication.
A standout figure in this year’s event was Heleina Young, a former Fijiana 7s player and national sprinter, who was named the overall outstanding female athlete. In her impressive return to athletics after a brief stint in rugby, Young won three gold medals and two silvers, further solidifying her impact on the track. She also served as Team Fiji’s flag bearer during the closing ceremony, a testament to her leadership and achievements.
In addition to Young, Nehemiah Elder emerged as the best junior male athlete, winning three gold medals and smashing nine records. Stanley Ooms, the va’a coach for Team Fiji, earned recognition as the overall best coach for his contributions to the team’s success.
Tahiti topped the medal tally, garnering 72 gold medals, while Samoa finished in third place with 27 golds. Team Fiji’s results reflect their growing prowess in a variety of sports, as basketball, athletics, swimming, and weightlifting all contributed significantly to their medal count.
