The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has responded to an incident that occurred during the semi-final match of the Tailevu Rugby 10s Tournament, which took place on February 28, 2026, at Ratu Cakobau Park. The match featured the Korocawiri (Ovea) Rugby Club competing against the Natakali Rugby Club.

In light of a brawl that broke out during the match, the FRU acknowledged that the Tailevu Rugby Union, the tournament organizer, is currently dealing with the situation directly with the involved teams. The individuals identified as participants in the altercation will face disciplinary measures from the Tailevu Rugby Union, which the FRU respects and supports.

FRU officials emphasized the importance of upholding the values inherent to rugby, asserting that such behavior is inconsistent with the sport’s fundamental principles of respect and discipline. FRU Board Chairman John Sanday underscored the organization’s responsibility to address misconduct, stating that rugby in Fiji represents more than just a sport; it embodies discipline and serves as a positive influence within the community.

Sanday noted the need for a formal reminder to be issued to all provincial unions across the country, reinforcing that such conduct is unwelcome in rugby. He stated, “Our safeguarding rules are in place for the safety and wellbeing of players, officials and spectators. We must work collectively to ensure our venues remain safe, respectful environments that reflect the true spirit of Fijian rugby.”

The FRU is urging all administrators, players, and supporters to unite in fostering a disciplined and positive culture within the sport. Events like these highlight the ongoing commitment of rugby organizations to maintain a positive and respectful atmosphere in matches, reinforcing the values that rugby stands for in Fiji.
