The recent initiative by the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) involved conducting three successful one-day clinics in Ba, targeting key areas such as coaching, refereeing, strength and conditioning, and first aid. The sessions took place in the tikina of Bulu, Naloto, and Savatu, drawing a collective 58 participants, with coaching being particularly popular among attendees.
Secretary of the Ba Rugby Union (BRU), Gaby Kautoga, praised the commitment of local clubs, with the Savatu clinic in the highland village of Drala showcasing remarkable dedication despite logistical challenges faced by the coaching team. Notably, one participant walked from Lewa Village to join the sessions, highlighting the strong community spirit.
Kautoga expressed admiration for the representatives from the clubs of Buyabuya, Drala, and Koro, emphasizing their consistent attendance and punctuality at training sessions. He recognized the region’s need for such opportunities, stating, “It wasn’t the busiest clinic we’ve had, but all the participants were very engaged, and this region really deserved to have these sessions after the efforts the clubs have shown.”
The clinic’s success is a continuation of BRU’s development strategy, which aims to enhance coaching standards across the province. Going forward, upcoming level two coaching clinics for men’s head coaches are scheduled, allowing for further skill enhancement that will benefit clubs district-wide. As part of this strategy, there is a hopeful outlook that these coaching efforts will lead to the advancement of local talent, setting a strong foundation for the future of rugby in the region.
Overall, these initiatives signify a robust commitment to the growth and development of rugby skills, vital for fostering local talent and strengthening community engagement.
