The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) Board of Directors has made a decisive move by terminating Laijipa Naulivou’s role as Director of Rugby. This action follows Naulivou’s resignation linked to her controversial remarks about lesbianism in the national women’s rugby team during a media interview. Despite her brief tenure, having only been appointed the previous Saturday, the Board felt it necessary to take this firm action to emphasize their dedication to maintaining professional standards in the sport.
Following Naulivou’s comments, the FRU Board asserted that such views do not align with their values of inclusivity and respect. In an official statement, they made it clear that Naulivou’s opinions were strictly her personal beliefs and do not represent the union’s official stance. The FRU has reiterated its strong commitment to creating a supportive environment for all players, regardless of gender, background, or identity.
The statement emphasized, “Our women’s team and all players can rest assured that this will in no way impact their opportunities, representation, and continued development as integral members of Fiji Rugby.” Additionally, it reinforced the organization’s adherence to the principles set out by World Rugby, which include ethical leadership and fair governance.
In light of this incident, the FRU is now focused on a seamless leadership transition. The Board has pledged to consult with key stakeholders to ensure the governance structure remains robust. Furthermore, a comprehensive and transparent selection process for a new Director of Rugby will be initiated soon.
This development is indicative of the FRU’s proactive approach in reinforcing its commitment to the core values of the sport, which ultimately contributes to a more inclusive and respectful environment in rugby, particularly beneficial for women in the sport. The actions taken reflect a broader effort to uphold the integrity of Fijian rugby and ensure that all players are valued and supported.
As the FRU takes these significant steps, there is hope that this commitment to inclusivity will foster a more positive future for rugby in Fiji, allowing for diverse perspectives and contributions to thrive in the sport.
