Fiji Rugby Union Set to Unveil New Coaching Duo This Week

The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) is poised to announce the new head coaches for the Fijiana 7s and 15s teams this week, as confirmed by CEO Rovereto Nayacalevu. He reported that offers have been extended to potential candidates, and they are currently awaiting their responses.

Among the notable applicants is Waisale Serevi, a legendary figure in rugby sevens, who has expressed interest in taking over the Fijiana 7s coaching position. His previous coaching experience includes a role with the Indian Women’s 7s team. Additionally, Sireli Bobo, a former rugby player with experience in both formats, has been mentioned as a potential contender; however, Nayacalevu has withheld the names of other applicants.

Today, Serevi is set to collaborate with Bobo and the Fiji Sports Council coaching team to assist in preparing the Under-20 7s squad, emphasizing the FRU’s commitment to nurturing young talent and providing them with the necessary support as they develop.

The vacancy for the Fijiana 15s head coach position came following the departure of Mosese Rauluni, who left in October 2023 after successfully leading the team to victory in the Oceania Championship and securing qualification for the upcoming Rugby World Cup. His impressive legacy poses significant expectations for his successor.

The Fijiana 7s head coach role has been open since Saiasi Fuli’s contract was not renewed in December after five fruitful years, during which he led the team to a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Nayacalevu emphasized the FRU’s goal of selecting the best candidates to improve team performance and results moving forward. This transitional period represents a critical opportunity for the FRU to enhance performance and leadership within women’s rugby, signaling a hopeful outlook for future achievements.

Overall, the impending announcements have generated excitement and optimism among fans and players alike, marking an important moment in the evolution of Fijian rugby. The focus on identifying talented coaches and fostering young talent suggests a commitment to building on past successes and enhancing Fiji’s competitive stature on the international stage.
