Fiji Rugby Sevens Welcomes Fresh Faces Ahead of Hong Kong Tournament!

Fiji men’s rugby sevens coach Osea Kolinisau has welcomed Fijian Drua development players Isikeli Basiyalo and Aisea Nawai into the extended squad for the upcoming Hong Kong Sevens tournament scheduled for March 28-30. Both players were part of last year’s Fiji Under-20 team, and Kolinisau has been in discussions with Drua coach Glen Jackson regarding their potential inclusion in the squad.

Kolinisau expressed that while the young players bring notable power and speed, their selection is not guaranteed. He stated, “We’ll have a look at them to see if they fit in. They’ll both fight for their position, and if they prove themselves, I won’t hesitate in selecting them.” Additionally, Apete Narogo, who earned recognition as the best player at the Nahehevia Sevens tournament, is also being considered for the final lineup.

The team is undergoing three weeks of preparation before the tournament, allowing Kolinisau to assess the new talents while identifying areas for improvement. He noted that some players are currently out due to injuries or illness, including Ilikimi Torosi, who sustained an injury during a match against South Africa, as well as players dealing with minor flu-like symptoms. Kolinisau emphasized the importance of having a fully fit squad, expressing optimism in getting all players ready by next week.

The ongoing process of integrating fresh talent into the squad not only showcases Fiji’s commitment to nurturing its rugby heritage but also provides a positive outlook for the team’s future performances on the international stage. Fans can remain hopeful as these young athletes strive to contribute to Fiji’s illustrious rugby legacy while competing against formidable opponents at the Hong Kong Sevens.
