After observing the first round of the 2025 Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League (FSSRL) zone competitions, head coach of the Fiji Bati, Wise Kativerata, expressed his approval of the progress displayed by young players in their understanding of rugby league. Unlike previous years, where many players tended to adopt a union-style approach, he noted a significant shift towards more effective league tactics during the matches he attended at the FSSRL Eastern Zone competition.
Kativerata attributed this positive change to the dedicated efforts of FSSRL staff who have organized coaching clinics across the nation in recent months. The coach highlighted that the young players demonstrated a better grasp of game strategies, especially in executing the six-tackle rule, understanding their defensive responsibilities, and improving their overall organization on the field.
“The most improvement in the games that I saw is that they complete their six tackles. They understand now they have to hold the ball six times. And the defense, they’re more organized,” Kativerata commented. “This year, there’s much improvement,” he added, reflecting on the notable advancements in players’ performances compared to previous years.
Looking ahead, Kativerata announced plans to establish development academies for players aged 14 to 17 after the FSSRL competition wraps up in the western, central, and northern regions. This initiative marks a crucial step towards nurturing emerging talent, emphasizing grassroots development that can lead to future opportunities in professional rugby.
The next round of the zone competitions is set to commence shortly, promising to continue the momentum of growth and skill enhancement within the sport. Kativerata’s optimism and the commitment to fostering young talent in Fiji’s rugby league is undoubtedly paving the way for a brighter future in the sport, making it more accessible and respected among the youth.
This positive outlook not only showcases the strides being made in player development but also highlights a growing enthusiasm for rugby league, ensuring that future generations will have the opportunity to excel in the game.
